Trade shows are always full of wheeled gadgets. From concept cars to hoverboards and more it’s pretty easy to get desensitized to one-, two-, three- and four-wheeled innovations. But some stand out a little more than others.
Amidst the bustling halls and cramped hallways of MWC 2017 we spent a little time playing around on Archos’ Airwheel Urban e-scooter, the E6-Series. I say “playing” because despite this being a commuting scooter, made for zipping between train and office, it’s so much fun it feels a lot more like play than transport.
The E6-Series is a highly portable folding scooter too, collapsing in a couple of seconds into something with a very small footprint. Simply pull a pin in the cross bar to fold up the frame, then drop the seat pads and handlebars to occupy little more space than an ironing board. At a little over 14 kilograms (with battery) it’s still a bit on the hefty side, but for just 750 Euros it’s quite affordable.
With a very impressive range of 30 kilometers, the E6-Series’ 350W motor can reach speeds of up to 20 kilometers per hour and its 6,700mAh battery charges fully in just three hours. Its pickup is pretty impressive too, even if the weighting makes it a little prone to wheelies if you’re not careful. We saw more than a few folks almost lose control of it when they hit the throttle.
There’s a companion app for iOS and Android too, that lets you mount a smartphone on the handlebars to change some settings and monitor your speed and battery level. The Airwheel was actually announced late last year, but we’re still very glad we stumbled across it at the Archos booth for a quick spin.
Watching show attendees rush to get out of your way as you speed down the hallways is one of the most exhilarating feelings you’re likely to experience at MWC. Or in the real-world for that matter. It will be available in April.
