Audi will ditch its recent tradition of model numbers and the all-electric SUV will be known simply as the E-Tron.
The German marque has come to rely on a series of letters and numbers for its latter day models, from the A1 through to the R8.
“It is comparable to the first Audi Quattro, which was known simply as the Quattro,” Audi chief Rupert Stadler told UK magazine Autocar. “In the long term the name E-Tron will stand for a pure electric driveline structure.”
The letters and numbers will be back
Audi has toyed with the E-Tron name, using it for the A3 hybrid and the nascent R8 electric supercar. It remains to be seen how the subsequent cars will fit into the line-up as they obviously can’t all share the same name.
Audi isn’t the kind of company that will opt for extravagant names, so we’ll almost certainly see a return to letters and digits before long.
This, then, is a splashy launch for Audi’s new direction before it settles in to an all-electric routine.
