A few months ago, Elon Musk was complaining on Twitter about traffic and added that he will solve the problem by starting a tunnel-digging company that will be called The Boring Company. The plan is to create a futuristic mode of high-speed transportation underground.

At first, it looked like the entrepreneur was kidding, based on the fact that he already has his hands full with Tesla, SpaceX, and other business ventures. However, Musk was serious about it and is already making progress with his new idea.

The newly founded company has recently received its first boring machine, which is currently located in SpaceX’s parking lot. You can see a few images in the gallery below.

It looks like the machine will first be used for testing purposes only. The company plans on digging straight down for about 50 feet first before it starts to dig horizontally. The reason for this is to make sure that it doesn’t disrupt any gas or sewage lines.

The whole point of the test run is to figure out what it takes to improve tunneling speed. It’s interesting that Musk has recently said the company is currently just “muddling along” and that he doesn’t really know exactly what he’s getting himself into.

We’re just sort of muddling along. We have no idea what we’re doing. I want to be clear about that.  — Elon Musk

The idea of building a vast underground transportation network sounds great on paper but does require a lot of work as well as a large investment. Based on the fact that the first boring machine has already been delivered to the company though, Musk clearly believes he can make it work.
