That ID Buzz concept we’ve seen in Detroit? Yeah, it’s not just vaporware, unlike the previous several Microbus throwback concepts we’ve seen from Volkswagen.

According to Automotive News’ well-placed informants, Volkswagen is keen to launch a thoroughly modernized version of the iconic T1 microbus of the 1950s. In fact, a production version could be launched by 2022 and it might end up looking very similar to the insanely cute ID Buzz concept we mentioned before. Sources say Volkswagen boss Herbert Diess is a big proponent of the idea and that should come as no surprise – the Buzz embodies everything Volkswagen wants to stand for today. It’s a clean, accessible, modern design that harkens back to an era when the VW badge was associated to flower-donning hippies, not under-reported diesel fumes.

ID Buzz features an all-electric power-train built on the MEB architecture and a 111-kWh battery (yep, that’s bigger than the new, record setting Tesla Model S 100D). It will join the ID hatchback (slated for 2020) in Volkswagen’s electrified lineup. Who’s excited?
